How much can I borrow?

You can borrow as much as you want. However, unsecured loans are really given above £20,000. Secured loans, against any equity value in your house for example, will normally be given up to a certain percentage (say 80%) of the value of the security that you offer the loan provider, in this case the equity value on your house.

The most important criteria for how much you should borrow - is how much can you ‘easily' repay each month (most loan providers will want you to make monthly repayments, even if you are paid on a weekly basis). You need to calculate how much income you normally receive each month and what your normal monthly expenses are. We have a budget calculator (click on the graphic on the right hand side) tha can help you to do this. Make sure that you budget for large expenses such as holidays, that don't come around every month.

In the end you will have a figure that you feel that you could put towards a loan. However, it is not a good idea to agree to a loan where you have to pay back monthly all of your spare income. There are always unexpected expenses and so you should put aside some money for those as well before you decide how much to borrow.
